How Well Does Nose Tape Work?

  • 5 min read

What is nose tape and how does it work?

If snoring or mouth breathing is something that you - and, by association, your partner - struggle with at night, you’re probably in the market for a solution. One option that you’ll undoubtedly come across is nose tape. But is this something that actually works to prevent snoring and improve breathing during sleep? Are they practical? Are they for you? Is there a better alternative? By the end of this article we’ll have answers for all of these questions and more. Let’s dive in.

Nose tape - also known as “nasal tape,”  “nasal strips,” or “external nasal dilators” - is a sleeping aid developed to help expand the nostrils during sleep. A reflexive piece of adhesive tape goes across the bridge of the nose, and its elastic properties pull the outside of the nostrils outwards, in turn widening the perimeter of your nostrils. You’ve probably seen pictures of these in use - Breathe Right is the most pervasive brand of these sleeping devices.

The idea is that by expanding the nostrils the tape is opening up your nasal passages in order to improve airflow. When air flows more easily, this helps to reduce snoring and improve breathing while sleeping.

Nose tape as a solution for snoring

When air flows uninterruptedly through the nose, it does so silently. However, when the airflow is disturbed by congestion in the nose or narrow nasal passages, the forced air creates vibrations. These vibrations present themselves as that all-too-familiar, annoying sound we recognize as snoring. But this is simply the cause ofnose snoring. Many people are surprised to learn that the vast majority of people who snore are actually mouth snoring. Mouth snoring results from forced air going through the oral passages as a consequence of sleeping with an open mouth. Mouth snoring can be fixed immediately - in most cases - by simply keeping the mouth closed while sleeping. SomniFix Strips were designed for just this purpose.

Nose snoring on the other hand, is a bit more complicated. It could be a result of a deviated septum. This is when the thin wall separating your nasal passages becomes dislodged, shrinking the size of one of the passages. When air is forced through the smaller airway, vibration occurs, resulting in snoring. On the other hand, nose snoring could also stem from congestion of mucus inside the nasal cavity. This effectively shrinks the area through which air can flow, once again causing vibration and snoring.

Nose tape is intended to pull the nostrils open wider from the outside. This helps to increase the size of the gap through which air can flow, allowing it to flow smoothly and silently.

Nose tape as a solution for congestion

In a similar way, nose tape is intended to help improve breathing when experiencing nasal congestion. By expanding the perimeter of the nostrils, this increases the size of the gaps through which air can flow in and out.  In turn, this makes breathing through your nose easier.

Nose breathing is better for you

Quite simply, nose tape is intended to make breathing through your nose easier. But why nose breathing? Well, as it turns out, nose breathing is far superior to mouth breathing during sleep. While mouth breathing can result in a variety of short and long term health issues, nose breathing during sleep provides bountiful benefits. Some of these benefits include:

  • Activation of the parasympathetic response, resulting in deeper, more restorative sleep
  • Fortification of oral health
  • Prevention of morning dry mouth
  • Rebalance of optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, and
  • Improved physical and cognitive function

For these reasons, we want to make nose breathing the default form of respiration during sleep. Nose tape is one of the ways to do this - but is it the best way? We’ll get to that.

Pros and cons of using nose tape

Many people have found success with using nose tape on a nightly basis; however, it’s not for everyone. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of nose taping.

Advantages

  • Easy to apply
  • Available in multiple sizes
  • Non-invasive when compared to internal nasal dilators
  • Affordable option

Disadvantages

  • Can loosen during the night
  • Sometimes painful to remove
  • Leads to irritation or redness on the bridge of the nose
  • Shifts or falls off with oily or sweaty skin

How effective is nose tape actually?

So what’s the verdict? Is nose tape a worthwhile nighttime practice? Well, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, studies have shown that nose tape is partially effective in reducing snoring. However, at the same time the nose tape is not keeping your mouth closed and so you can easily still mouth breathe even if your nostrils are open and clear.

Plus, since mouth breathing is the most common cause of nasal congestion, opening up the nasal passages to make breathing while congested easier is treating the symptom, not treating the problem. If you keep your mouth closed while sleeping and default to nose breathing, nasal congestion will be drastically reduced. The same goes for mouth snoring.

Ultimately, nose tape is a marginally effective way to treat the side effects of mouth breathing. But if that’s the case, why wouldn’t we just treat mouth breathing itself?

SomniFix Strips: The superior alternative to nose tape

If there’s one thing that you take away from this article, it should be that mouth breathing is evil. Okay, maybe evil is a strong word. But mouth breathing is far inferior to nose breathing during sleep. It is the root cause of most nasal congestion and snoring. Plus, it leads to many  downstream health issues and reduced sleep quality. If you can eliminate mouth breathing, you’ll most likely eliminate the discomfort caused by nasal congestion and snoring. But how can you control the method through which you breathe during sleep?

SomniFix Strips were created for this very purpose. Our Strips use a gentle, skin-safe adhesive to hold your lips sealed while you sleep. This inhibits mouth breathing and induces nose breathing instead. In turn, this will dramatically reduce nasal congestion, snoring, and the many other negative effects of mouth breathing. Plus, you’ll benefit from deeper, more restful sleep, along with the many beneficial effects of nose breathing.

Tens of thousands of people have discovered great sleep by using SomniFix. Many were snorers who now sleep silently all night long. Others experienced uncomfortable congestion that made nose breathing difficult, but not anymore.

Use SomniFix Strips instead of nose tape. After all, why would you solve the symptoms, when you can solve the actual problem, using a more comfortable method to boot! Or, use SomniFix in combination with nose tape if you have a deviated septum, naturally narrow nasal passages, or still struggle with congestion. This will maximize the effectiveness of and ease with which you nose breathe while you sleep.
